We took him home and began feeding him every two hours with small amounts of food to avoid him getting
bloat from eating too much at once. He went to the vet and what we found was awful. This young man could
not get out of the box because someone had shot him in the back end shattering his right rear leg. The bullet
had also taken a chunk out of his other rear leg. The bullet is from a riffle and is rather large. It is lodged just
the other side of his intestines and has gone through his colon. Because of his ordeal Mel became famous,
his story made the evening news (click here to see the news coverage) and so many followed his slow but
steady progress.
And now Mel has the perfect family, one which he loves and is loved, unconditionally. Mel, We will forever
love you and are so happy that you finally have the love and safety that you so deserve. ( There is hardly a
day that goes by that I don't miss my little shadow....)
We would like you to meet Mel. He was brought to us on Saturday,
Feb. 10th, 2007 by two young men who while driving through the
country saw a box on the side of the road with what looked like a tail
sticking out of one side. They went back to check to see what was in
the box. Inside they found a dog that was so weak he could not
stand. A farmer drove by and stopped also, he said that he saw the
people dump the dog in the box about two weeks ago. So, for two
weeks this little guy has been in this box while the temperature had
been below freezing with no food, no water, and before these young
men stopped, no one to care.

Dear Kim and Jackie, A day doesn't go by that we don't think of you and tell" Melvin" how thankful we are to
his mommies! He is more than we could have hoped for. We miss our Irish setters terribly, but he has
stepped in and filled some very big red paws. He is the happiest pup I've ever seen. He goes from one toy to
the next, hops and trots around the yard. Throws his babies in the air and then pounces on them. He walks
perfect on his flexi lead and gets 3-4 walks a day. As I thought would happen, he loves my husband, he is
always by him. Although I'm happy to say he is not as clingy , each day he seems more at ease. He'll spend
a few minutes in the yard without us out there and he'll go into the other room and play with a toy.
Our girl Pinky loves her baby brother. They lay by each other. Its so cute to see them laying in the windows
together. She has only had to tell him a thing or two a couple of times. He'll walk past her and lean over and
give her a fast kiss. Sometimes she watches him like we do, just taking in the joy of his happiness. I have
some photos I will get to you. After about the first week, we didn't kennel him anymore. He has not done one
bad thing in the house! He knows sit and he'll stay pretty good. We play "show dog". We have his neuter set
up for Tues. the 24. We are also going to have new xrays done, just to compare and make sure all is well. So
far his chipped teeth have not bothered him. He's been around all of my family and on Easter he went to
Denny's mom and dads house with his large family. He's great with kids. He goes for rides with us in the
car. Him and Pinky are so cute in the back seat together. He looks great. Very healthy. He definitly has a
thick coat. He likes to be brushed and lets me do his toenails. He's wonderful, what can I say! Next weekend
I'm out of town, but maybe some Sat or Sun soon we could bring him over for a visit. I really would love for
you to see him. Many thanks and love from Mel. Priscilla
